Unfortunately, I have not read the novellas "A Lighter Touch" or "Hellacus" and I think because of that it has somewhat taken away from the experience of this book.

I say this because this story is rushed. The story takes place three years after the events that took place in the previous novel. Literally 59% of the book is spent catching the reader up on what's happened to the main and supporting characters.

Of course, all of the characters just so happen to be in perfect positions in their life to go on another adventure with Brent. There were so many characters that I had completely forgotten what had made them unique in context to their old places in the story. When they were split up they were completely forgettable. Part of this might be because I've read a few books in between these two and I didn't realize I would need to read the last two over again just to get a basic idea of who everyone was again. Like I said. Forgettable. I've read the Wheel of Time and was never as lost in that behemoth of a series as I was in these short novels.

After more than half of the book was expended to try and catch me up to speed our adventure finally begins after a series of unnecessary cameos where everyone is happily and romantically paired up with someone. In fact, this didn't read so much as a novel as a story of Brent and his messiah like abilities to at once to be this caring cherub like matchmaker and also a brilliant tactical genius. He is so smart that even the author cannot express how Brent comes to the conclusions that he does.

Not only is there zero growth in any of the characters but what is there is all guided by Brent himself. It's as if none of these characters can function by themselves until Brent is able to come along and show them the way. The whole thing starts to become dull and heavily predictable. Even the characters that "die" come back to life with a spontaneously appearing girlfriend.

As for the "new threat to the universe." You see them perhaps three times the whole book and they are predictably defeated two out of the three times.

I just realized I'm probably beating a dead horse. The book was predictable, unexciting, too convenient by far, and lacked anything to make it stand out among its peers. However, I still read the whole thing hoping it would get better. I did this all the way up until the chapter "loose ends" where the author literally ties up anyone who could be single and/or not overwhelmingly successful in their life. At this point I just want to go read something real now. I sincerely hope the author takes some of this into consideration for his next novel. I'll give it a chance if that says anything.

The Ninth Reavers edition by Benjamin Schramm Children eBooks Reviews

Good series. A little juvenile but I don't mind. Looking forward to the next one.
enjoyable not much to say
I hate coming in in the middle of a series. Good writing, but too many plot lines that don't come together until the last quarter of the book.
I disagree with the previous post as mostly being a recap. SPOILER ALERT If you have read the last two Brent "Ninth" books, you know Brent is a creation of the mechanized humans to go back to being in a human body. Yes Brent likes to play match maker with his friends and also a counselor to help them get over their issues. That is just a background for further action and Brent getting blasted out of his current hiding place by "seventh". Seventh thinks he is or should be worshiped by as a god. He has gotten some simple aliens with weaver like powers to try starting the old Shard path of eliminating humans. In this mix is a group of pirates that at first you wonder if they will be Brent's foe, but get roped into helping in the end to help protect humanity. The story was good, not as good as the last two, but still decent read and good writing. So If you liked Brent the match maker, solver of personal problems, and tactician unbelievable, this is a book for you. I did enjoy the further expansion of Brent's friends relationship and some of the resolutions that were not resolved as of the last book.
