This month's Gabby Mom review is all about helping those around us especially those that are grief stricken. I know from experience as well do the power grief has over a body when we lose someone very close to us. Thinking about continuing on with everyday activities seem to elude us during that time. Well Lorrie has always been one that was accused of being able to say the right thing at the right time and has really opened up to us all on this one.Alot of times the ones watching things like this unfold are at a loss on what to say or what to do. But Lorrie combs through it all and shows us with a little sympathy to the heart we can help those around us when they are having these trying times. Maybe just to sit a listen to them, to cry with them. Maybe a card or a series of cooked meals delivered to their door. She also gives you many things you should not say which was really comforting. I know during my miscarriage many family members said some pretty upsetting things to me that I still have not forgotten. So please know your words carry alot of weight with them.
There also some meal ideas and recipes included so you don't have to frantically pour over cookbooks to find the right recipe. She gives you so other great ideas that I bet you never thought of. Running errands, cleaning, picking up their children from school and many more. This is a nifty resource to have and keep on hand for times such as these. I thought the ideas in Lorrie Flem's e-book "Healing Hearts with Helping Hands" were well presented. How many times are we in a situation where a friend or acquaintance has faced loss and is walking through the process of grieving? I find that, many times, I flounder in what I should say or do which can make me seem uncaring. I really appreciated the author's thoughts on why many of the statements we tend to make to someone who is grieving tend to come across as insincere. This e-book touches on death, funerals, prolonged illness, injury, and other situations including stillbirths and miscarriage.
Often our actions speak louder than words. Personally I find it easy to grab a card and pop it in the mail, but how do we go one step further in being loving and encouraging? Lorrie includes a section on how providing a meal or meals can be very encouraging and, while might not be vocalized, can be a big weight lifted off the shoulders of the person or family in their time of grief. Not only does the author give suggestions on meal ideas, but she has included many of the recipes to make it that much easier to jump in and be a blessing to someone!
I enjoyed this e-book for it's practicality. I know I will be referring to it in the future when I have the opportunity to come alongside and, hopefully, help carry a burden for someone walking through grief.
I love the title of this book. . .Healing Hearts with Helping Hands. When people we care about are going through the loss of a loved one, a serious illness or another life-altering challenge, it is hard to know how to respond. We care and we want to help but what do we do? We want to say something to encourage and show that we care but what do we say? Lorrie Flem offers good advice and ways to help in this little gem of a book.
This book offers actual words you can say or adapt as you minister to someone who is in a difficult place. Lorrie shares from her own experiences as she lost loved ones as well as times she cared for others in that situation. She also offers unique ideas on what to do to help, even if you are a busy mom yourself. I think she is "right on" when she suggests you offers specific ways that you can help the person instead of just saying, "Please call me if you need me" because most of the time people won't call and don't want to impose on others. Even if it is a situation where you want to send a card, Lorrie helps you know what to say and not to say in the card.
She also offers great advice on what to take for meals, along with recipes. As someone who has food allergies I agree that it is good to ask, if possible, what not to take. The recipes all looked great although I did not try one out yet. I think this book would be a great help to ANYONE. There are Bible Verses that could also be used to minister to those who need help so especially geared to Christians.
Lorrie Flem of Eternal Encouragementfollow has once again reached out to teach and touch the lives of women in her book, Healing Hearts with Helping Hands. In this book she walks through the process of grieving and offers an extensive list of practical and helpful ways we can encourage and love on each other as the Word says we should.

~ What meals to bring (or not to bring)
~ How to act (and things to avoid)
~ When to do it!
I appreciated that she points out that there is no right or wrong way to grieve; also that each person needs their own timetable to work through their loss.
Knowing what to do and how to make that first step is always the hardest. Just loving and listening is the best thing we can do for each other. The important thing is to DO SOMETHING!
Remember those that are supporting someone in the hospital. When my grandfather was passing, friends brought care packages to the hospital so we didn't have to leave him. Just a simple bag with crackers, bottled water, chocolate, powdered drink mix, change for vending machines are all items that will be used and appreciated.
Summary of the book is to LIVE - Don't waste a minute! Love on those close to you and be a blessing to the people around you. Scriptures have dozens of verses on being blessed by being a blessing. One of my favorites is Philippians 21-2follow
