So many glowing reviews for this book - but they (the reviews) all have the same writing style - and all written on December 17th, 2010. In preview mode on I found two typos in the first 13 pages. It might be an OK book but I'll wait for some more reviews by people with history.
Indian Harbor Ladies Book Club gave "Preemptive Strike" rave reviews at our discussion last night - 9/11. 14 women of various ages began by recalling our own Cold War memories of school drills, fall-out shelters, and the red phone. Comments included

This is a helluva read! Literally could not put it down! I was distracted by some anomalies and misspellings, i.e. "hatchback" (Webster's has the term circa 1970, laser (was first built in 1960) focus, van/von (both spellings in different places, where van is Flemish, but von is German) Braun. Politically, how could a dead man (Lenin) NOT have "allowed that madman Stalin to succeed him"? Except, of course, by seeing to his (Stalin's) prior demise. My main criticisms were technical but do not detract from a rip-roaring yarn and an excellent first offering.
Preemptive Strike is a gripping page-turner. Mr. Scully has spun a yarn reminiscent of Adam Hall's Quiller novels. The story rests on a premise that is highly plausible for the period in which it is set. Real people, companies, and events are married to fictional ones in a way that leaves the reader wondering whether or not there is some semblance of underlying fact. This fast-paced espionage thriller is definitely a must read.
While the book has a five-star plot, it does suffer from some stylistic issues. Descriptions of the principal characters and their special attributes are repeated so often as to suggest the reader can't remember who is who. For example, Mr. Scully has created an immensely interesting sociopathic Soviet spy antagonist, whose incredible talents are only matched by her viciousness. However, her importance to the Soviet Union and her extraordinary capability are mentioned far too many times for my taste. This repetition carries over to the other principal characters as well. My other minor quibble is with the inconsistency of the quality of the dialog. It ranges from sharp, realistic exchanges to somewhat stilted conversations. Fortunately, the plot line is strong and the action moves quickly. The reader is too interested in finding out what happens next to be overly concerned with these minor issues.
Buy the book and read it immediately. You won't regret the purchase.
This is a remarkable historical novel that keeps your interest to finish the book quickly. The history of the period of the Cold War is recounted as the story unfolds, and this fills in many gaps in publicly known history. Most of the modern story lines of Patterson, Higgins, et.al. pale compared to Preemptive Strike. This book is definitely worth reading for sheer enjoyment, but also for the accurate history. Cleverly included is the history of trains serving the NE USA of the period. This, I'm sure is accurate and truly fascinating that someone could recount this important public transportion system and weave these trains and stations into the substance. Thanks to the author for the enjoyment.
Preemptive Strike is an astonishing achievement for a debut novelist! This gripping thriller -- a movie begging to be made -- had me riveted throughout, but especially in the fast-paced denouement with its chilling action and surprise revelations. Scully is a fresh new voice redolent of a Ken Follet or Tom Clancy, but with his own special way of communicating the feelings of the times. He skillfully brings to vibrant life several key moments in WWII history; only Scully could depict early 1950's New Jersey train travel on the Lackawanna with such sensitivity and warmth.
The Eisenhower administration knows pre-Sputnik that the Soviets need only one piece of US technology to be able to launch long-range nuclear missles. John Scully spins a suspenseful story replete just the right amount of lust, seduction, intrigue and violence to pull us into this battle of Moscow's spies in New York and US spies in Russia. This fast moving fictional account affords an enjoyable chance to learn more of our history in a style akin to Ken follett or Richard North Patterson. Highly recommended, including as a gift, as I am doing, for septuagenarians or octogenarians who lived through this most intense cold war period as teenagers or young adults.
